Monthly advice from Dr. Andrej Stare: hydration

24. 07. 2024
During the summer months, especially during heatwaves, many guests show signs of dehydration - a lack of water in the body. As temperatures approach 30 degrees Celsius, sweat secretion through the skin pores increases. There are three types of pores in our skin: holocrine, apocrine, and merocrine. Sweat secretion cools the body (evaporation), but it also causes the loss of precious water. Dehydration manifests itself in excessive thirst, headache, dry mouth, blurred vision, sleepiness, heat cramps, shivering and vomiting.
Monthly advice from Dr. Andrej Stare: hydration

Hydration tips

Water is the main mediator of all chemical reactions in the human body. It generates about 4.2 million of reactions every second. The human body detects a lack of water - dehydration - by means of special cells in the central nervous system (the brain). When there is a lack of water, these cells give impulses to other centres, especially the thirst centre, because of the need to bring extra water into the body.

We therefore recommend that guests drink as much fluid as possible on hot days, when swimming and sunbathing on the beach, or walking for long distances in high temperatures. Plain water or a cup of tepid tea is the best way to stay hydrated. Avoid sugary and alcoholic drinks, as alcohol binds water to itself, causing further dehydration.

How much fluid is enough?

We recommend that all guests consume at least 1 litre of liquid  daily (water, tea, sparkling water) and avoid sugary and alcoholic drinks during the day. You should also protect your skin with appropriate creams and protect your head with a suitable head covering.

Nutritional tips

The body also draws water from food, especially fresh fruit (watermelons and melons) and vegetables (cucumbers, celery, zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce), so in addition to hydrating with water, we recommend you to include fresh fruit and plenty of fresh vegetables in your meals. Keeping yourself hydrated will help you stay healthy and well all year round.

Remember, your body needs water to function optimally, regardless of the time of the year.
