Monthly advice from Dr. Andrej Stare: heatwave

05. 08. 2024
Slovenia has experienced three heatwaves and is expecting two more. Chronic patients should be careful, especially during tropical nights. Tips for a safe summer include providing shade, using sunscreen, limiting time in the water, staying hydrated, showering regularly and avoiding the sun during its strongest hours.
Monthly advice from Dr. Andrej Stare: heatwave

Slovenia has already experienced three heatwaves in the first seven months of the year, and meteorologists are forecasting at least two more by the end of the summer. From a medical point of view, a heat wave is very unpleasant and even dangerous for some groups of people. In particular, patients with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, rheumatism, thyroid diseases and malignancies are at risk of feeling unwell and having unpredictable reactions. These guests should take extra care during heatwaves and tropical nights (when night temperatures exceed 20 degrees Celsius).

Here are some tips for risk groups and everyone in general:

1. Stay in the shade:

wear a protective hat and sunglasses when outdoors.

2. Use sunscreens:

choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

3. Limit your time in the water:

stay in the water for no more than 10 minutes and wear sunglasses and a protective hat.

In addition to these tips, which are also recommended for healthy people age 50 and over, it is important to:

4. Hydration:

drink enough water, avoid sugary and alcoholic drinks.

5. Showering after getting out of the water:

this helps to keep the skin fresh and prevent irritation.

6. Swimming and soaking:

it is recommended to swim in the morning and late afternoon.

7. Avoiding the sun:

stay in the shade between 12:00 and 15:00, when the sun's rays are at their strongest.

If you experience nausea, headache, vomiting or burns, see an emergency doctor immediately.

Monthly advice from Dr. Andrej Stare: hydration

During the summer months, especially during heatwaves, many guests show signs of dehydration - a lack of water in the body. As temperatures approach 30 degrees Celsius, sweat secretion through the skin pores increases. There are three types of pores in our skin: holocrine, apocrine, and merocrine. Sweat secretion cools the body (evaporation), but it also causes the loss of precious water. Dehydration manifests itself in excessive thirst, headache, dry mouth, blurred vision, sleepiness, heat cramps, shivering and vomiting.
